Saturated fats in coconut milk – How good are they ?
With our lives getting more and more busy, we start to look for the best ways to boost our healthy lifestyles.
Some of the best plant based fats available can improve your weight, the results from your exercise regime, and just give you that all-around health boost.
A magazine article on dietary factors that aid a healthy lifestyle and weight – factors that would help you achieve better performance and reach your goals – typically include:
- Calorie intake,
- Quality protein sources,
- Lower carb options,
- Avoiding processed foods,
- Vitamins and minerals,
- And good fats.
Now many people read these articles but still do not completely understand the positive impacts these factors can have on them.
Fats for example. What are good fats?
Good Fats Vs. Bad Fats
Like protein and carbohydrates, fats also have a classification.
They can be saturated or unsaturated (mono- and/or polyunsaturated fats.)
We can say that most people today are aware of the negative impact saturated fats can have on the human body, but a select few still question this. But its all about moderation right?
However, we say why choose saturated when you can have un-saturated goodness that is just as tasty, and maybe even better!
Say hello to the MCTs ( Medium Chain Tryglycerides). These are a unique form of dietary fat that impart a wide range of positive health benefits.
Fats can also be classified by the number of molecules contained within them, medium length are called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), and MCTs require less steps in digestion than long-chain fats.
Technically, MCTs are fats that are 6 – 10 molecules long, while long-chain fats exceed 10 molecules and most commonly are 16 – 18 units in length.
For a number of years – when it came to increased performance MCTs were primarily reserved for hard core, endurance athletes who spent hours training and competing.
Recently, a published study required recreational athletes to consume a small amount of MCTs (10 grams) each day over a two-week period and complete a 40-minute moderate-intensity exercise that was immediately followed up with a period of high-intensity exercise until each study participant was exhausted.
When compared to ingesting other fats, MCTs significantly increased the time the athletes were able to exercise and the authors also found that blood lactate concentrations (a metabolic by-product that can accumulate excessively and is associated with muscle fatigue) were lower when compared to eating longer-chain fats.
In addition, the participants also reported that the exercise felt easier (lower ratings of perceived exertion) when MCTs were consumed.
Let’s now have a look at MCTs and Weight Loss.
We all know that the more calories burned or expended the greater the positive change in weight loss and weight management.
In two recent peer-reviewed articles, it was highlighted that a number of published studies have reported on the ability of MCTs to increase energy or caloric expenditure.
In addition to increasing the amount of calories burned, other studies have also indicated that MCT ingestion can work in other ways to improve health. For example, published studies report that MCT ingestion can improve the oxidation of fat, which essentially means that the rate and extent to which fat molecules are broken down in the body is increased.
Several studies have also been published by various prestigious Universities. Their research consistently supports the notion that consuming a diet with added amounts of MCTs increases both calorie burning and fat oxidation.
Finally, a systematic review of the literature performed in 2015 indicated that a total of six published studies are available that indicate MCT ingestion favorably reduces body mass as part of a greater program.
Nowadays, for many people, fat intake is still misunderstood and has become a real challenge to implement in a positive way. This leads to some people removing fat from their diet all together, an unhealthy choice which negatively impacts vitamin intake and hormones.
For this reason, choosing MCTs rich foods in your diet such as LeCoquin signature series products is an easy way to get the good fats you need and enjoy them at the same time.
More and more people are choosing to add a serving of the LeCoquin coconut products when baking or creating salad dressing, some of them even using it in their protein supplements.
Be sure to always look for a superior source of MCTs derived from preferred coconut sources – Like LeCoquin signature dairy free foods.
